Photographs of my father in his 70s and 80s always show him with his head hanging to one side. In my 70s, similar photos would show my head hanging straight forward because it was painful to simply hold it upright. Whenever I sat down I immediately tucked my fist under my chin in order to take the weight of my head off of my neck. In 2011, I decided that it might be a good idea for me to start working out. Observing other personal trainers, I liked the way Peak Physique owner/trainer Tony Adams worked with his clients. When I asked for a consultation, his first question was “What are your goals?” I was an 83 year old male with two heart surgeries, lower back pain, a knee with no cartilage and arthritis in my fingers. My goal was to relieve my pain and attain as high a level of physical health as possible. Tony was confident that he could help me address my issues. Within a relatively short time after starting my work with him, acquaintances began to note that I was walking more erectly. Prior to, and simultaneously with Tony’s guidance, I had been working with the Feldenkrais method, and each complemented the other well. I find that as my posture improves the level of pain decreases. Tony likes to say “You work on and with issues, not around them.” I have great confidence in Tony’s knowledge and the way he works. He holds not only a B.S. in Exercise Physiology, but also he holds one of the top nationally recognized certifications. He not only knows anatomy, but is able to analyze physical problems and prescribe exercises that will address them. He is insistent about using proper form and technique. It sometimes takes my brain and body a while to understand how a particular exercise is to be performed, but with his patience and encouragement, I eventually learn what is possible for my body to do. I look forward to continued improvement in areas of pain reduction, flexibility, strength, balance and overall health. I will continue working with Tony for his excellence in dealing with all of these matters.. Check me out on video doing 15 full push-ups, which hasn’t happened since Army basic training in 1951. Who knows what I’ll be able to do at 100! – David W....

Jeanette C -Testimonial

This is a testimonial from our client Jeanette Carpenter and her 16-week journey to compete in Mrs. Virginia pageant March 2015. Written by: Jeanette Carpenter, M.D. Being a wife, physician, and mother of two, my time was very much spoken for. But life does seem to throw you surprises, and as chance had me, I found myself in the world of beauty pageants and the winner of Mrs. Richmond!  As ecstatic and surprised as I was, I knew that before I took the stage in the Mrs. Virginia pageant, I still had a ways to go. I have always been naturally thin but I was not tone nor did I feel “fit.”  I had some problem areas- namely my midsection, back, buttocks and thighs that really needed to be tightened up; after all, I was going to be on stage in a bikini!  So I decided to a consult with Peak Physique owner Tony Adams for some help.  At the time my body fat was 24% and I weighed 130 lbs. Although I had no idea what my goals should be, other than looking good, Tony sat down with me and helped me set some very realistic and measurable goals to reach for.  Because Peak Physique is a concierge, in-home fitness company, Tony came to train with me at my home saving me invaluable time.  After my initial assessment and measurements, we began working together to come up with an eating plan that would encourage my body to change; I needed to increase my muscle and drop my fat, without losing weight. We also worked on a customized workout to start toning the right areas while softening others so that I would look my best on stage.  My experience was so successful and fulfilling that I wanted to take you through my road to my pageant. Week 4 check-in Working with Tony and the Peak Physique team is not what I expected. I assumed I would be forced to do multiple exercises over and over with sweat and tears – like a boot camp. But it’s nothing like that. They pay attention to your cues and recognize when you need to stop and when you can keep going (even if you don’t know yourself). I never have to guess what to do when I am not working with my trainer; everything is written down for me, and they are very accessible for when I may have questions.  After only four weeks I have made great progress…. my body fat percentage had dropped 2.7% (down to 21.3%), I lost 1 inch off of my waist, and like we planned, I...

The Road to a 5K: JC’s journey

The Road to a 5K: JC’s journey Meet Peak Physique client John Carter “JC” and his road to running the VCU Broad Street Mile 5K.  UPDATE: Sept 25, 2014 I did not know what to expect (of the 5K), and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Although I did have a couple of minor issues that I was dealing with, I think I did pretty well. My official time was 43:39, now I don’t know if that was good or not. But, to me, it was excellent. I said I was going to do it and I crossed the finish line. I would have NEVER been able to do any of this if it wasn’t for Parker. When I showed my 74 year old mom the picture of me crossing the finish line, she started crying. I see an 8K coming up in November. I will have to put some thought and a lot more training in to do that one. But, I already have people that want to run with me. I still cannot believe that. Sept 19, 2014 I am going to do this race. I have always admired the people or friends that do these 5K, 10K or whatever. Never did I think I would EVER consider doing one of any kind. Once I started getting in shape, quit smoking and eating better I felt more confident in myself to try new things. So, I picked this 5K to start with. I know it is not a 10K or a marathon, but to me it is just as big. I know I will do fine. I still haven’t gotten the knack of running, but I am going to give it my best shot. Aug. 29, 2014 I’ve had some ups and downs the past couple of weeks. I also had some good news and bad news. As always, the good news first: I had my annual checkup and my blood pressure was 119/72, the best I have had in probably 20 years.  My Dr. was very pleased that I had lost weight, quit smoking (a whole month now), quit soft drinks (also one month), started exercising and now running. He was so pleased that I no longer have to take 2 of the medications that I have been taking for years. Now the bad news, I got some virus and was out of commission for almost a whole week. Once I got over it I was very week and it took me a couple of days to try to get back into the swing of things. Once I started back with...

I met Monica Woodward a little over a month before my wedding.  My goals for personal training were to get toned and to learn more about strength training.  Monica opened up a whole new way of exercising for me.  Before, I was doing cardio and a few ab exercises but I wasn’t doing any real strength training.  She’s so friendly and knowledgeable and she always came to our appointments with amazing workouts planned for me.  It was amazing how much stronger I was at the end of our month of training and I really felt great in my wedding dress.  I highly recommend working with Monica, whether it’s in the short term to get ready for an event like a wedding or in the long term.  She really personalized our sessions to my individual needs, whether it be to accommodate health issues, to prevent injury, or to give nutrition tips.  She’s fabulous! ~ Katie...

Don’t let your chronological age dictate  how “old you are”. Yes, at some point we perceive that we are “slowing down”, that our joints hurt or that we are just plain old tired! I’m a 66 year old female! I  have some joint issues and lots of things on my calendar! Over a year ago I began working with Monica Woodward. She is more than a personal trainer. She has been and continues to be my life coach. I’ve had my challenges, especially on the nutrition side. But I’ve had a net weight loss of nearly 40 pounds. I regularly attend the Peak Physique Run Club and am looking forward to training for my first run in 2014. I’ve developed a new set of friends and I receive constant encouragement and support from Monica and  the PP team. FYI, the run club is free! And, when I do what I’ve been trained to do, I have more energy!  I’m looking forward to see what I can accomplish in 2014! So, WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE?!?!?! Bev B. aka “The...

Woohoo!!! After 6 1/2 months, I finally hit my half way point…45 pounds, gone, goodbye, adios, au revoir, please don’t ever return LOL!!! BIG thanks to Doug James and Tony Adams from Peak Physique for helping me get to this point AND all of you for your support along the way! And great news from my doctor. He was very impressed at my weight loss. He said and I quote “I want you to understand the significance of what I am about to tell you. I see 6,000 patients per year. Out of those 6,000 annual patients, I may have 6 success stories. I have two next week going in for gastric bypass surgery. However in my 20 years as a doctor, you have the most dramatic change I have ever seen. Congrats! Your blood pressure is pretty close to perfect (124/76) as it can be (and I had not taken my BP medication that day because of the fasting/pending blood work). I am going to rerun your blood work from April 2013 and I should have the results in 5-7 days. If it shows what I think it will show, I think we can stop your cholesterol pill, your high blood pressure pill and your acid reflux pill. Good job!” BEST NEWS EVER…I am very happy and even more determined now! Now we begin the sequel to get rid of the rest of the weight. ~ Chris G. 6 months = Lost 45 pounds, 15 inches and 6% body fat. Chris has traded in his 3x shirt for an...
